Kenya's landscapes are rich in diversity. Almost every known land form exists here, from snow-clad mountain and glaciers to arid deserts, from dry savannah to lush lakes and dense forest. The Great Rift Valley, it's floor littered with lakes and extinct volcanoes, cuts through Kenya from North to South. On the Equator majestic Mount Kenya (5199 metres) with it's snow-capped peaks rises above endless grass plains. To the North is the rugged and remote northern frontier district including Lake Turkana, "the jade sea". The famous Masai Mara Game Reserve to the south west is the Northern extension of the Serengeti Ecosystem. To the South, the Indian Ocean coast offers sandy white beaches and turquoise seas protected by a fascinating coral reef, big game fishing par excellence, fascinating scuba diving and snorkelling. Above all, there is the wildlife : not only the Big Five (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard) in abundance, but plains game of every description and many more unusual species including Grevy's Zebra, the Beisa Oryx, the Reticulated Giraffe, the Gerenuk, Eland and Roan Antelope. The annual migration of hundreds and thousands of Wildebeest and Zebra from the Serengeti in Tanzania into the Masai Mara is the ultimate in any wildlife safari. Birders are richly rewarded with over 1000 recorded species, many endemic to Kenya.
