Situated North of Mombasa and Malindi, on Kenya's Indian Ocean Coast, on the middle outlet of the Tana River lies the Delta Dunes Conservancy.
This is the only wetland of its type in Eastern Africa. Come and explore this phenomenon with incredible birdlife; aquatic life and wildlife coupled with endless miles of vast uninhabited beach that is wild, exciting and extremely beautiful……all to yourself.
The Delta wetlands are diverse as they are unique and fragile, with amazing birdlife and large numbers of hippos & crocodiles. Enjoy 35kms of uninterrupted deserted beaches and miles of rippling, rolling sand dunes. Creek fishing, kayaking and sand yachting are what you can expect to find here.
There is 150,000 acres of conservancy being set aside. This will be owned and managed by the community, with support from Delta Dunes Lodge. There is a community run Lodge on the main Tana River, which Delta Dunes supports, and together with the Community will be setting up a cultural centre for visitors from Delta Dunes to visit and to learn about the fascinating and very different cultures of the Orma and the Pokomo peoples.
The Pokomo people’s lives revolve around the River and its flooding cycles which irrigate their fields and their mango trees.
The Orma are Ethiopian by origin and are traditionally pastoralists moving their beehive shaped dwellings across the flood plains wherever the grazing takes them. It is possible to visit these incredible tribesmen.
