Fundu Lagoon

Destination:
Pemba Island
Location:
Pemba Island

Fundu Lagoon is on Pemba Island, situated north of Zanzibar Island. The hotel is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of Pemba, only accessible by boat.

16 rooms, consisting of canvas tents set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden decks, all with views over the sea. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom with fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by wooden walkways through indigenous forest. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront and the remaining on the hillside, which have wide lagoon views. Two of the rooms are suites, with their own private deck and plunge pool, and two are superior suites which also have an extensive indoor and outdoor lounge space and mezzanine platform.

Superior suite

The main hotel is built under thatch overlooking the ocean. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the main dining area or at the jetty bar with a three course lunch and dinner, all with a choice of dishes of international standard. Some meals will be served on the beach. There are two bars, one of which is situated a third of the way along the jetty which stretches deep into the sea.

Fundu is the epitome of a "bare foot paradise" with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. It is a place for guests to relax and unwind in casual, yet stylish surroundings. For the ultimate in stress relief you can visit the treatment room where a variety of massage and beauty therapies are available.

Romantic dinners

Access to Pemba Island is by light aircraft charter or scheduled flight. Chake Chake Airport is in the centre of the island. After arriving at the airport there is a short 30 min road transfer to Mkoani Port where guests then board a private speedboat for a 20 min transfer to Fundu Lagoon.

The best weather is between December and March and again from July to early November, with the optimum months being July through to September.

Swahili Night

The hotel has a fully equipped dive centre, ‘Dive 7/10’. Trips are available to nearby Misali Island with a pristine beach for superb snorkelling and diving. Dhow sunset cruises, canoe safaris through the mangroves, sailing trips on a 30’ catamaran or in the canoes of the local fishermen are also available. Excursions around Pemba island can also be organised with some advanced notice.
