Kambi Ya Tembo safaris with Mt Kilimanjaro in the distance
Rising out of East African soil is the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro the highest peak on the African Continent at 5895 metres. It is also the tallest free standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is probably the most accessible mountains for visitors from around the world and most who reach Uhuru Point do so with little more than a walking pole, proper clothing and will power earning them a certificate, memories and stories to tell. Besides from reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro there is so much to take in a long the way. Even before you cross the park boundary (at 2700m) the cultivated footslopes give way to lush montane forest, inhabited by elephant, leopard, buffalo, endangered Abbot’s duiker and smaller antelope and primates. Higher still lies the moorland zone where a cover of giant heather is studded with otherworldly giant lobelias. Above 4000 m a surreal alpine desert supports little life other than a few hardy mosses and lichen then finally gives way to winter wonderland of ice and snow.Kilimanjaro National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site.
