Mtoni palace tour, private taarab concert and coffee ceremony. Let the sounds of Taarab music sooth you!

We take you on a memorable tour around Mtoni Palace, its baths and courtyard which was the residence of the first Sultan of Zanzibar and the birthplace of princess Salme who vividly described the palace in her diary. Your experienced guide will not only give you the inside information on the life past the threshold of the palace, but also emphasize on the restoration works and building materials that were used during the seventeenth century.
When dusk settles in, lanterns and torches are lit. An open fire accentuates the beautiful arches and illuminates the stage area. Back in 1820 the centre stage
had been Sultan Said’s inner courtyard, privy only to elite and privileged Palace residents.
While the sun sinks into the Indian Ocean witnessed through the typical arches of the courtyard, we serve lemongrass tea and cardamom coffee with Zanzibari sweets like halua, sesame-coconut brittle and dates.
The sweet scents of rosewater and incense is filling the air whilst you listen to the lyrics and soothing sounds of the Taarab musicians who passionately play their violins, tabla, Oud (Lute), Guanun and Nay.
After the concert we will escort you with our torches over to the neighboring restaurant or arrange your transport to return to your hotel.
